The U.S. First Lady Melania Trump is the wife of President Donald J. Trump and the mother of Barron Trump. She is now the second First Lady born outside the United States, yet the only First Lady to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.
From Slovenia to New York
Melania Trump was born in Slovenia on April 26, 1970. When she was 16, she started her very successful modeling career; featuring in several high-profile ad promotions and working with some of the top photographers in the fashion industry.
When she turned 18, she signed with a modeling agency in Milan and started traveling around Europe and the US. It was at the New York Fashion Week party where she met Mr. Trump. The couple married in 2005 and had a son, Barron, in 2006.
Around 2005, she was the Honorary Chairwoman of the Martha Graham Dance Company. That same year, she was awarded the Goodwill Envoy of the American Red Cross — a position she held for four years. Ms. Trump served as Honorary Chairwoman of the Boys’ Club of New York for five years and in 2006 she was elected Woman of the Year by the Police Athletic League. Ms. Trump joined National Love Our Children Day and National Child Abuse Awareness Month, ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ.
In 2010, Ms. Trump was Chairwoman of the American Heart Association, which raised $1.7 million for research. During the same year, she became a businesswoman who released her own jewelry line in 2010 and a caviar-based skincare line in 2013.
A ‘traditional’ First Lady
By 2017, Melania Trump had made the White House and Washington home to her family. In her position as First Lady, Mrs. Trump concentrated her time on the many issues that concern children. The unwavering quality of the First Lady is her desire to display affection and kindness with everything that she does.
She spends the majority of her time meeting with kids who are patients at hospitals and care centers, bringing them gifts and much of her care.
Regarding the destructive hurricanes in 2017, Ms. Trump toured Texas to meet the families who suffered a terrible deal under Hurricane Harvey. And at the time of the two horrid mass killings, Ms. Trump flew with her husband to Las Vegas and Parkland to support the victims and families in their period of need.
As First Lady, Ms. Trump has visited many schools. From engaging in the Viking Huddle Class about emotional learning at Orchard Lake Middle School in Michigan to bringing the Queen of Jordan to Washington, D.C.’s first community charter school for girls at the Excel Academy in the Southeast, she has always put kids at the center of her agenda.
Also, in the wake of the opioid crisis, Ms. Trump used her position as the First Lady to raise awareness about the risks of opioid abuse — including the detrimental impact it had on children and unborn babies. On May 7th, 2018, Ms. Trump unveiled BE BEST — an awareness-raising initiative focused solely on the well-being of children.
She may not be like the First Ladies before her, but Melania Trump will make her mark on history.
