SDGs Initiative: UNDP Growth Stage Impact Ventures

UNDP, EPFL Tech4Impact, Orange, and SAP are joining forces on the second selection process for the Growth Stage Impact Ventures for SDGs (GSIV). The goal is to define and demonstrate mature impact ventures in emerging countries with a catalytic potential that can drive large impacts and yields.

Application Deadline: 15th July 2020 at 11:59 pm CET.

The 2020 GSIV Call for Nominations will promote programs that lead to resolving inequality and empowering disadvantaged and marginalized people in developing countries in the following areas: increasing access to quality health care, raising access to sustainable and renewable energy, and reducing and restoring waste.

Who can nominate entrepreneurs?

Third parties like accelerators, impact funds, family offices and international organizations can appoint up to three entrepreneurs meeting the eligibility criteria. National entities connected to the same larger corporation may nominate each. Self-nomination by entrepreneurs is not approved.

Eligibility: Enterprises with the following profile:

  • A developed business model and a clear financial track record (based on number of clients, break-even, valuation, and turnover);
  • An advanced technology, business model or mechanism with a significant competitive advantage (intellectual property, specific original market plan, uniqueness factor);
  • Closed Series A deal (valued at US$ 500,000 or more) or achieved a break-even by organic growth;
  • Had their accounts audited;
  • Retained a strong team of complementary competencies to manage and develop a business;
  • Effect-driven model — meaning that the goal of the initiative is to produce tangible, meaningful social or environmental impacts, with impact assessment measures and/or main success indicators in place;
  • Mission-driven companies (possibly within the scope of by-laws);
  • Contributed or have the potential to ensure the success of more than one SDG, in an integrated manner;
  • Followed an integrated business model of goods and services involving individuals at the bottom of the economic ladder (BoP)—people with less than US$ 10 a day or other excluded or marginalized groups — as customers, manufacturers, retailers , distributors and employees;
  • Demonstrated that they are scalable at global, national, or cross-sectoral levels.

Eligible Countries: Developing Countries

Number of Awards: Not specified

Selection & Value of Award: The selection process consists of four stages:

  1. Initial evaluating to check compliance with minimum eligibility criteria;
  2. Shortlist of 24 impact undertakings (8 per theme) based on the information disclosed by third-party nominators;
  3. Evaluation by the Technical Committee of the in-depth profiles of the chosen ventures with the goal of narrowing the list to a maximum of 12 suggested ventures (4 per theme). The Technical Committee shall include members of foreign organizations, major companies, academics, developers and thematic experts;
