Relying on the alignment of the planets to make choices dates back to the dawn of time. The powerful do not deny it, neither do we. So what? This trust placed in the stars would be all that there is more human.
Heads of state have consulted astrologers for centuries. The Roman Emperor Tiberius had his appointed omens. Queen Catherine de Medici questioned magi and alchemists, including Nostradamus, the star of the time.
Normal that we too are – mere mortals! – fond of the lights that can bring us the pros of the sky. Of course, our questions about our affairs of the heart, our job or our health (these are the three big issues on which we ask them most often) do not engage the fate of a country or a company. But ours, yes!
A great umbrella against the glitches of life!
When we read our horoscope or have our birth chart established, we want comfort above all, to hear that everything will be fine. What is it surprising when the world seems terribly complex to us and the future anxious?
A view (and a point of view) of the mind!
It’s not just our need for reassurance that blinds us. But also a well-known cognitive bias: the Barnum effect (or subjective validation effect) highlighted by the psychologist Bertram Forer in the 1940s. He gave his students a personality test and gave each of them, without warning them, the same description written by drawing from horoscopes. 80% of “guinea pigs” felt that the description corresponded to them perfectly!
The experience has been repeated often, always with the same result. The more the subject is convinced that the analysis applies to him alone, the more he recognizes an authority in the speaker. The more the description of his personality has positive traits … the more he adheres to it. We therefore understand better why horoscopes mainly tell us good news! And we touch on the possible risks of manipulation when unscrupulous minds take over the discipline.
A descent in itself and a rise to heaven!
Astrology also exposes us to the well-known phenomenon in psychology of “self-fulfilling prophecies”: when we are the object of predictions and projections, we tend to make them our own and subconsciously do everything to make them come true. For the better … and, alas, for the worse. But all is not to be thrown into the kingdom of the stars! We can find strength and energy just by reading an optimistic horoscope. And even draw from it a form of authorization to act and take the plunge when we are plagued by persistent doubts about an important decision (change of position, for a professional retraining, for example).
Some astrologers also use the birth chart as a starting point, a tool to get people to think, find resources in them and come up with their own solutions.
