Our lives are organized around strategic thinking. Each day we make easy decisions, like what to dress for work or what time to get up, that don’t give us too much tension. Perhaps greater decisions; actions that might alter our life or impact someone we love — may be a cause of considerable anxiety.
Here are few techniques to consider every time you feel stressed or confused about it.
- Get Clear on What You Really Want
Decider, know thyself. I’ve found that lingering around sometimes means that you’re not pleased about all of the options; since they’re not enough for who you are. The true explanation of why somebody may not be able to make up his mind is that no choice is what he really desires. So, when you’re torn among options, think of what you really desire.
- Don’t Choose Something Just Because You’re “Supposed To”
If you know what you truly want, you’ll have to ignore the voices in your head — or the cynical people around you — who try to convince you to do something different. But, if you feel rushed to make a good decision, step back, and analyze your logic. If you can’t think of a good answer, you know it isn’t for you.
- Remember That Doing Something Trumps Doing Nothing
It’s accurate 99 percent of the time. People tend to work jobs that pay bills but don’t know anything about their career path. They’re so terrified of getting the wrong path that years go by, and they’re either working in a coffee shop, or they’re struggling from the same job they joined in college.
- Practice Being Decisive
You recognize who you are: you waste more time flipping through Netflix than watching the half-hour film. Or you constantly tell the waiter that you do need some time until you know what you want to order.
If you are consistently indecisive, develop your decision-making muscle by starting little. Give yourself 30 seconds to determine what you’re going to have for dinner, what show to watch, or if you want to go somewhere later. Follow up on the decision. Repeat it. Step up to bigger stuff, then.
