The recent pandemic of the Covid-19 virus has proved that women in the Presidency were better leaders in managing the situation. They showed talent, ambition, drive, and favorable life circumstances. In countries where female leadership is uncommon, it didn’t stop them to exercise perseverance and determination to rise up the rank and eventually succeed.
As mentioned by the former president of the United States, Barack Obama “If women ran every country in the world, there would be a general improvement across the board on just about everything — living standards and outcome”.
Obama said that a great leader questions themselves and those around them. Asking things like “How can I make the people around me better? How do I empower them? How do I build a team where everyone’s pulling together to get something done?”. And in his eyes, women are better at these things. ”Not to generalize, but women seem to have a better capacity than men do, partly because of their socialization.” He said.
Born to lead.
These natural-born women leaders showed a higher rate of initiative-taking, acting resiliently, practicing self-development, driving for results and showing high integrity and honesty.
From Germany’s Angela Merkel, Scotland’s Nicola Sturgeon, New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern, Iceland’s Katrín Jakobsdóttir to Norway’s Erna Solberg. Each one of them adopted her own unique leadership style. But they all focused on boosting trust, reducing fears and handling the crisis at hand.
Research has found that women adopting a more transformational leadership style, which includes showing compassion, care, respect and equality. Contrarily, men have a more transactional approach, including a more task-focused, achievement-oriented and directive style of management.
Furthermore, what people need now are leaders with empathy, compassion and the ability to show support. The kind of skills that women leaders tend to show more than men. While it took a global pandemic to finally recognize the unique talents and capabilities that women leaders offer. Companies should not wait until there is a crisis to provide to women the opportunity to lead.
